Case #3
Colorectal Cancer -
81-year old female
History
An 81-year old female with a history of rectal carcinoma and elevated serum C.E.A./154.1. PET scan was ordered for restaging of rectal cancer.
CT Findings
Patient had CT July 2003 compared to exam of May 2002. Impression: Left mid abdomen ostomy with resection of rectum and left colon since 5/02 exam; stable spleen hypodensities; no liver mass; unusual oval structure anterior abdomen near the anterior abdomen/pelvic wall of uncertain significance; no evidence of recurrent rectal tumor.
PET Findings
The PET scan (image above) reveals an increase of glucose metabolism in the left upper posteromedial lung field (SUV 4.6) which fulfills the quantitative criteria for neoplasm; correlation with CT of the chest was recommended. The result of this CT (image above) reveals a mass in the left lung field that measures 1.8 cm. The PET scan was then fused with the CT scan of the chest, combining anatomical imaging with functional imaging. The overlay image produced from the fusion imaging (above) in this patient reveals the lung lesion to be a metastatic site.
Change in treatment plan
This patient was upgraded for TX of the new site.
