Case #5
Colorectal Cancer -
47-year-old male
History
A 47-year-old male with recurrent colorectal cancer. Colostomy performed in 1994, and a urostomy tube placed into his left kidney in 1995.
Original Diagnosis
A recent CT scan of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis showed no evidence of disease.
PET Findings
The whole-body FDG PET scan showed a focal area of increased metabolic activity in the presacral region, consistent with tumor recurrence. There was also an area of soft tissue with increased metabolic activity in the region of the rectum — the previous rectal site. This area is also consistent with recurrence.
Dosage
14.4 mCi FDG
Imaging
ECAT EXACT HR+
Change in treatment plan
PET enabled the physician to diagnose recurrent cancer and begin a new treatment plan immediately.
