Case #16
Breast Cancer -
36-year old female
History
A 36-year old female with palpable 4cm right breast mass. Referred for initial staging and restaging after tx.
Original Diagnosis
Mammography showed 4cm right breast mass highly suggestive of malignancy. Biopsy confirmed Adenocarcinoma consistent with Ductal Carcinoma of the breast. Pt scheduled for lumpectomy.
PET Findings
Initial PET scan (01/02) showed a primary neoplasm in right breast plus identified three nodes in right axillary region and small area in left axillary region. Nodal sampling was recommended. Nodes confirmed positive.
Restaging PET scan performed (06/02) after aggressive radiation tx and chemotherapy showed all areas of intense metabolic activity within breast and axillary nodes have resolved bilaterally. The PET scan saved the pt an unnecessary invasive procedure which would have left unseen disease behind.
